Washington D.C. Public Employees Arrested for Asbestos Crimes

Two employees of the District of Columbia's Department of the Environment were arrested late last week on allegations that they accepted $20,000 in bribes to turn the other way when presented with evidence of gross violations of asbestos regulations. On a routine inspection of a construction site last month, the workers found improper handling of hazardous asbestos. Rather than write an official report as standard operating procedures require, the employees offered to bury the report in exchange for a payoff.

Who's hurt by bribes like this? It's not construction managers and it's certainly not the public employees who are on the take. It's the construction workers asked to handle dangerous, cancer-causing asbestos without proper training or equipment. Because of the extremely long latency period associated with asbestos, exposed workers won't know if they've been injured for decades. And when they learn that they suffer from asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma, they'll be thirty or forty years removed from the directors, officers, and company responsible for their exposure!

Does your loved one work in construction? If so, he may have been exposed to asbestos during a remodeling or demolition project - just like the workers in Washington D.C. He needs to learn about his rights as soon as possible. The time to act is now!
