9/11 Firefighters At Higher Risk of Asbestos Diseases

With the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaching, many Americans are mindful of 9/11 victims, their families, and the public servants - police officers and firefighters - whose lives were so dramatically changed. Tragically, the legacy of that day continues for many firefighters who were exposed to aerosolized asbestos fibers, a carcinogen which causes such asbestos-related diseases as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. In fact, a recent study found that exposed firefighters are 19 percent more likely to develop cancer than firefighters who were not present at the World Trade Center. As many as 10,000 firefighters may have been exposed to asbestos on 9/11!

Fears | Nachawati understands the risk of asbestos exposure that firefighters all over the country face. Burning buildings, like the World Trade Center, aerosolize asbestos fibers, significantly increasing the likelihood of exposure. If your loved one is a firefighter, give us a call to talk about their possible risk to asbestos and whether the fire department may be liable for their risk of injury.
