Children Released, Asbestos Workers Arrive at Tennessee Elementary School
This summer Linden Elementary School near Knoxville, Tennessee, will undergo a transition that mirrors one which many schools are experiencing nationwide. Soon, students will leave for the summer and asbestos removal specialists from Environmental Abatement Inc., an asbestos removal firm, will arrive. According to Oak Ridge Board of Education estimates, the summer project will cost $131,000 and result in the removal and destruction of 70,000 square feet of asbestos-based ceiling tiles.
Of course, the presence of 70,000 square feet of asbestos raises a question which many Oak Ridge parents are asking: how many children have been exposed to asbestos during the last several decades? It’s a worthwhile question, not only for the past and present students of Linden Elementary, but for elementary schools nationwide.
