Virginia Jury Awards $25 Million to Asbestos Victim

Newport News, Virginia is home to the Newport News Circuit Court and, thanks to a state court jury, also home to an asbestos victim who recently received $25 million in compensation for his asbestos-related illness. For eighteen years, Rupert “Bert” Minton was a repair supervisor and shipyard worker at Newport News Shipbuilding. During his tenure, Mr. Minton worked on seventeen Exxon oil tankers and, as a result, was exposed to significant amounts of asbestos, leading to his mesothelioma.

The jury not only awarded Mr. Minton with $12.4 million in compensation for his loss, but also an additional $12.5 million in punitive damages aimed at telling Exxon and tortfeasors like it that in Virginia, tortuous companies have to pay for their negligence.
