Courthouse Worker Dies from Asbestos Exposure
America’s courthouses are more than administrative buildings. They are functioning symbols of our country’s commitment to justice and to the belief that every citizen enjoys an inherent right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Tragically, for Nancy Lopez and her family the Jackson County Courthouse in Kansas City, Missouri, also stands for a shortened life and heart-wrenching unhappiness.
Built in the 1930s, the Jackson County Courthouse was constructed with asbestos products like insulation and air ducts. When it was remodeled in the 1980s, some suspect that workers were careless in their removal of this dangerous carcinogen. As a result, several courthouse workers, including the late Nancy Lopez, were exposed. In 2007, Ms. Lopez died of mesothelioma, a cancer caused exclusively by exposure to asbestos.
If you work in a building built before 1980, you may have been exposed to asbestos, too! There’s no cure for asbestosis or mesothelioma, but prompt health care can extend life expectancies significantly. The law also affords protection to asbestos tort victims, providing the financial recovery necessary to fund health care expenses and provide for your family. What’s your next step?
