Should Asia Brace for an Asbestos Pandemic?
The World Health Organization (WHO) published a study in Respirology recently in which it cautioned Asian policymakers of the potentially catastrophic effects of asbestos exposure in their populations. Since the 1970s, just as U.S. and European use of asbestos began to decline, Asian use of the deadly carcinogen has skyrocketed nearly five-fold. In the United States, more than tens of thousands of people have died from asbestos - and another 3,000 will die this year. Asia, however, represents a new breed of asbestos risk: the WHO estimates 125 million people, mostly in Asia, are exposed to asbestos in the workplace. In the years ahead, asbestos-related diseases could be a major killer in Asia!
