Canada to World: Asbestos Not a Hazardous Industrial Chemical
Representatives of the world's nations met in Geneva, Switzerland, earlier this month to finalize the provisions of the United Nations treaty known as the Rotterdam Convention. The Convention identifies a list of hazardous industrial chemicals that countries can ban from import. The Convention's scientific review body as well as representatives from Australia, Chile and the European Union (EU) recommended that the Convention include asbestos, a mineral that causes fatal, incurable cancer, on the list. However, Canada, one of the world's major producers of asbestos, succeeded in defeating the proposal and thus securing its ability to sell the mineral that annually kills 107,000 people worldwide.
Canada's success in Geneva this year is a costly one for the world. Having seen first-hand the ravages of asbestos-related diseases, industrialized countries like the United States have passed domestic laws to protect their citizens. However, developing countries such as China, India and Brazil have yet to shield their citizens. Canadian obstinacy will be particularly hard on these nations as their citizens become exposed to asbestos.
