Iowa Contractor Sentenced to Six Years of Probation for Illegal Asbestos Removal
Des Moines, Iowa, has been rocked in recent months with an asbestos scandal. Last week, a federal judge sentenced a contractor responsible for renovating the landmark Equitable Building with conspiracy to impede and impair Environmental Protection Agency asbestos removal procedures as well as violations of the Clean Air Act.
According to the findings of a federal grand jury, the contractor and a fellow conspirator, a project developer, removed and improperly disposed of several floors worth of contents that contained dangerous levels of asbestos. By removing the asbestos, the co-conspirators endangered the lives of workers and the public, exposing them to aerosolized asbestos fibers, a lethal carcinogen known to cause such incurable diseases as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
