Sixty Bags of Asbestos Dumped in Vacant Homes
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency announced recently that an individual in Toledo, Ohio, abandoned sixty bags of asbestos across several vacant homes in an Ohio working class neighborhood. The unusually large amount of illegally disposed asbestos has led law enforcement officials to conclude that the disposal most likely came from a large building complex nearby, rather than a city home. The penalty for illegal dumping, a violation of Ohio environmental law, may include not only fines, but jail time as well.
Proper asbestos disposal can cost thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, in an attempt to cut costs, some builders and property owners cut corners by improperly disposing of asbestos-filled products such as shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, and insulation. The tragic result is that innocent community members are exposed to asbestos – and the risk of asbestos-caused diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis – without their knowledge or consent.
