Asbestos Deaths Expected to Rise Significantly in Coming Years
According to the latest estimate of the anticipated incidence of asbestos-related disease published in Environmental Health Perspectives, in the coming decades the number of asbestos cases will increase significantly from historic levels. Eun-Kee Park of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health explained his group’s findings, saying, “As our estimation is based on asbestos use until 1970, the many countries which increased asbestos use since then should anticipate a higher disease burden in the immediate decades ahead.”
Despite federal legislation in the late 20th century, the United States remains one of only eight countries where cumulative use of asbestos exceeds three million metric tons. As Park asserted, “Health authorities in these countries should anticipate the need to deal with a very high burden of mesothelioma in the immediate decades ahead.”
Park’s study suggests that you might be at risk of asbestos-related disease! In fact, because of the low dose required to induce illness and long latency period, many Americans are surprised to learn they have an asbestos-related disease.
