Power Plant Workers Exposed to Asbestos
The list of industries that used – and exposed employees to – asbestos continues to grow. Power plant workers have been added to the list that includes Navy veterans, automobile brake mechanics and construction workers, among many others.
Last week, researchers published the results of their anticipated study, Retrospective Exposure Assessment to Airborne Asbestos Among Power Industry Workers. The study tracked more than 8,600 active and former German power plant workers and found that a shocking 94 percent were exposed to asbestos during their employment. Many of the workers were exposed for an average of 20 years, and incredibly, 82 percent did not have any safety precautions established at their workplace.
In fact, the recommended safety procedure for many was to hold a wet sponge or cloth to the mouth and nose to prevent asbestos fiber inhalation and ingestion. The ineffectiveness of such a recommendation is on par with “just hold your breath.”
