Asbestos Dumper Faces Prison and $435,000 in Penalties
Illegal disposal of asbestos can be costly. For James Robert Soyars, Jr., the costs of improperly disposing asbestos during his renovation projects include six months home detention and more than $435,000 in restitution.
According to federal prosecutors, Soyars, a certified asbestos abatement supervisor, violated the Clean Air Act by dumping asbestos from renovation projects in a storage locker in Denver, Colorado. As U.S. Attorney John Walsh explained, “The improper handling of asbestos is a crime because even minimal exposure is dangerous.”
