Storm Tears through Courthouse, Reveals Asbestos
A storm in Belen, New Mexico, tore through the Belen Municipal Court Building this week, caving in ceiling tiles, covering floors with water, and ruining the carpet. The storm not only uncovered ceiling pipes and led to ripped-up floors but revealed that much of the building was built using asbestos.
The good news for Belen city managers is that the building's insurance policy covers the structural remodeling costs, which could rise to $40,000. The bad news is that the policy doesn't cover asbestos remediation. Even worse, the policy doesn't protect against the health consequences associated with occupational asbestos exposure. The judges, court clerks, and staff attorneys who work at the Municipal Court Building may have been exposed to asbestos, leading to such lethal diseases as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
