Public University Potentially Liable for Improper Asbestos Removal
According to an investigation and report by Wisconsin Department of Commerce, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) violated state law when it ordered workers to remove asbestos from a campus building. The investigation concluded that UWSP failed to notify employees working in the asbestos-affected area of the presence of the harmful carcinogen and failed to appropriately protect its employees.
Tragically, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce report was released more than 15 months after the department first received a complaint from a UWSP faculty member. During that time, the asbestos-bearing floor tiles have long since been removed-and the potential harm associated with aerosolization and exposure occurred.
