What Is Asbestosis?
Exposure to aerosolized asbestos fibers is harmful and dangerous to your lungs. In its most deadly form, this exposure can result in mesothelioma or lung cancer. Often as a precursor to these lethal diseases, a patient may suffer from asbestosis, a non-cancerous scarring of the lungs that produces results in severe dyspnea (i.e. shortness of breath).
In general, asbestosis is an occupational disease which results from high-intense or long-term exposure to asbestos. Tragically, during the 20th century millions of blue-collar workers – shipyard mechanics, pipefitters, brake manufacturers and repairmen, and construction workers, to name just a few – were exposed to asbestos. In fact, experts believe that the full cost of occupational asbestos exposure remains unrealized. Currently, 3,000 Americans are annually diagnosed with mesothelioma and other asbestos ailments.
