Virginia Jury Slaps Exxon Mobile with $25 Million Mesothelioma Verdict
A Newport News, Virginia jury sided with Rubert “Bert” Minton, now 72, holding the international energy giant responsible for the shipyard worker’s terminal and very painful mesothelioma. During his 18 years of service, Minton repaired 17 Exxon commercial oil tankers and, in the process, was exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos, a carcinogen that affects the lining of the lungs and leads to incurable cancer. Of particular interest to victims, the Newport News jury took less than a day deliberating the results of the three-week trial and returned a verdict that included $12.5 million in punitive damages – two and a half times the amount requested by the plaintiff!
