Is Your Office Safe from Asbestos Risk?
When Hewlett-Packard Co. began remodeling its Corvallis, Oregon campus last summer it didn’t anticipate that it would break the law. However, that’s exactly what happened. According to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), contractors for HP disturbed 456 square feet of asbestos-filled vinyl tiles. In fact, workers for the contractor, Contract Flooring and Interiors Inc., broke up the tiles, aerosolizing the asbestos contained in them and imposing significant risk on themselves and others. As Claudia Davis, an air quality specialist with DEQ, explained, “There is no known safe level of exposure.”
Asbestos wasn’t banned as a building material in the U.S. until 1989. As a result, most offices contain significant amounts of asbestos in the flooring, ceiling tiles and wall insulation. Although safe if left undisturbed, aerosolized asbestos can be lethal!
