Asbestos May Doom American Aeronautical Landmark
Since 1932, Hangar One at Moffett Field in California has dominated the skyline. Originally built to house the airship USS Macon, Hangar One served for years as a home to NASA spaceships. Nearly 200 feet tall and covering more than 10 football fields in length, Hangar One has long been a special symbol of Silicon Valley. However, this spring that symbol is being taken down siding sheet by siding sheet.
The fatal flaw in Hangar One’s construction was asbestos. Shut down since 1994 due to asbestos risk, Hangar One will require $22.3 million in clean up cost in order to return it to serviceability. Frankly, it’s $22 million that Congress simply doesn’t have right now for a NASA project with a dubious future utility.
